Abstract
"Lines of Resolution features more than 25 artists from 11 countries in the first study to investigate how drawing practices intersected with early broadcast television and video. Between the late 1950s and the 1980s, the growing availability of in-home television sets, and later of portable video cameras, rapidly personalized technology. The electronic screen, in homes and artists' studios for the first time, became a brand-new source of imagery. Early televisual images--transmitted and displayed in raster lines--created new possibilities for artists such as Teresa Burga, Anna Bella Geiger, Nam June Paik, Adrian Piper, and Richard Serra, who used television and video as modes of self-reflection, venues for political messaging, and sites to perform drawing. Essays by curators Anna Lovatt and Kelly Montana examine how artists harnessed the familiarity of drawing to create work in reaction to the small screen and its global cultural prevalence. Ranging across various drawing mediums and video works shown by multiple stills, Lines of Resolution: Drawing at the Advent of Television and Video also includes artist biographies and close-ups displaying both the textures of televisual technologies on screen and the drawn line on paper" -- Provided by publisher.
