Le beau bizarre: les peintures du XIXe siècle au Musée d'arts de Nantes
By
Abstract
Signed Ingres and Delacroix, Burne-Jones and Tissot, Baudry and Gerome, paintings of the XIX th century that are the hallmark of Nantes art museum often seem part of an "uncanny". The special spirit of this impressive collection - 700 paintings by 90 artists among the most prestigious, French, but also English, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian - is explained by the choice of acquisitions made since the XIX th century. It is rare indeed that one can be proud of having hosted so many works famous in the life of artists. The audacious tastes of the period were based on paintings of hieratic beauty, surprising, sometimes disturbing.--Translated by Le Passage.
