By

Abstract

"Born the son of a forester, Johann Georg von Dillis (1759-1841) achieved an astonishing social rise for his time, becoming director of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. As a painter, he helped shape landscape painting in Germany around 1800 and is considered the most important representative of the "Munich School." After his death, he was long forgotten. It was only in the second half of the 20th century that he was rediscovered through a series of exhibitions and publications of his watercolors and oil sketches. This book is the first to celebrate the artist's printmaking and present it fully illustrated. The complete oeuvre presented here comprises 55 etchings and the only known lithograph by Johann Georg von Dillis. With a few exceptions, all works are shown in their original size and provided with information on their size and location in public collections. In addition to a general introductory text, each print is accompanied by a short accompanying text."--Provided by publisher.
