Abstract
"The present collection of jewellery, almost all Portuguese objects, numbers more than two hundred items or sets, chronologically placed from the 17th/18th centuries to the second half of the 20th century. It consists nearly entirely of profane items for use by women. They range from different typologies of earrings, necklaces, pendants, rings and bracelets, stand-alone pieces or forming parures sets or demi-partures. We have decided that this book should provide a historical context and also discuss several formal issues concerning these items of jewellery, which we thought would be an opportune moment to address in a work of this nature, as it was decided not to include iconography such as paintings or other visual documentation that is usually included in books on this subject. Furthermore, we choose to include complete illustrations of all the jewels and sets from the collection, and, at the end of each chapter, also their relevant characteristics, such as type of gems, dimensions, weight, marks and hallmarks, when existing."-- Introductory note (page 5-6).
