Abstract

This book 'The pigeon in western painting, from the 3rd to the 21st century' pays attention to pigeons as a subject or secondary character in this art. "As an interested person in the cultural background of the pigeon, I went in search of a book describing the role of the pigeon in art. Such a book turned out not to exist. Books have been written that depict the horse, the dog or the cat in art as their subject, but the pigeon, the animal that is undoubtedly the most common in western art, has inexplicably not been discussed. surprised, because pigeons have played an important role in the lives of many people for a long time and still do. During my work on this book, it turned out that there were so many works of art with the pigeon as subject or secondary character that it had to suffice only describing the place of the pigeon in western painting. I have not strived for completeness, but for a global overview in which the pigeon is followed through time on its journey through the western world and painting"
