Abstract

"With this book, we open the door to an almost unknown part of the National Museum's magazines, a cultural-historical picture collection with hundreds of framed drawings and paintings that have adorned Danish homes for 300 years. The book's 450 paintings and drawings are snapshots from a bygone era. They testify i.a. about now-disappeared buildings and about the changes that have taken place in cities and in the countryside over the centuries. The works are created by renowned artists and enthusiastic amateurs, but common to them is that the majority are collected for the museum with a focus on their cultural-historical narrative. Dating, location and an often great wealth of detail make the works an important source for topographical and architectural historical research. Here, especially Rach's and Eegberg's paintings are fascinating- in them you can almost go on a city walk in the Copenhagen of the 1740s! In a few cases, the same motif is depicted every few years and by different artists. It provides a unique opportunity to follow developments. All types of homes have contributed works to the collection, and personnel history information and provenance are indicated where possible. Therefore, the book offers not only a look into the cities and landscapes of the time, but also a look into the homes of Danes."--
