Damaged soul: visual cultures of the penitent Magdalene in Spain

By

Abstract

Publisher description: "The Spanish Gallery at Bishop Auckland holds a small yet remarkable collection of works by Spanish artists whose renown has not yet reached the heights of their contemporaries. The three paintings of Mary Magdalene in the collection, by Luis Tristán, Pedro de Orrente and Alonso Cano, are the focus of this book. Using these works, the author explores the visual cultures of the penitent Magdalene in Spain, providing an in-depth analysis of the iconography and context of these paintings. Marta P. Cacho Casal, an affiliated lecturer at the Department of History of Art at the University of Cambridge, investigates the role of Mary Magdalene in the early modern Hispanic world, offering new insights into the cultural and religious significance of this figure."
