Abstract
"When you talk about the master of ukiyo-e beauties, there is none other than Utamaro Kitagawa. This name is so famous that there is not a single person who does not know it; however, in fact, his biography is surrounded by mystery. At this exhibition, by exhibiting Utamaro's colour woodblock (nishiki-e) and illustrations of woodblock books (hanpon no sashi-e), illustrated books of kyōka poetry (e-iri kyōkabon), erotic prints (shunga), original brush drawings for prints (hanshita-e) and paintings (nikuhitsu-ga), an attempt is made to set up a challenging, hypothetical theory by not only retrospecting his great art history, but also by clarifying his mystery as an artist"-- Foreword (page 5).
