Claude Monet in Zaandam

By

Abstract

"In Claude Monet in Zaandam new insights are published about the influential stay of the impressionist in the Zaan region in the summer of 1871. For the first time a number of locations are described, including his two Westzijderveld paintings with the windmills. The backgrounds of the relationship that Claude Monet had with the wealthy merchant family Van de Stadt are also discussed in more detail. Numerous new information has been found about his 25 Zaan paintings, in particular the portrait of Guurtje van de Stadt and his iconic painting of the merchant's house Oostzijde 221. It also describes the work of artists who worked in the same locations as Monet and who were inspired by him. For example, the Frenchman Armand Guillaumin, a friend of Monet's, who came to Koog aan de Zaan in 1904 on his advice and made at least two etchings and seventeen paintings with windmill panoramas. Art historian Henk Heijnen describes the work of Monet and his followers in detail. Investigative journalist Ron Couwenhoven conducted extensive historical research into the artist's residence and relations in Zaandam"--Provided by publisher.
