Women in a Bathhouse

anonymous, 1850 - 1950

This is a line block, also known as a key block. The contour lines of the design are carved in high relief. Typically, the line block is the first block to be printed, usually with black ink. Then, for each colour a separate colour black was cut. These were inked and printed one by one. The registration marks on each block ensured that each colour could be printed exactly between the black contour lines.
