Incense Box

Uzawa Shogetsu (mentioned on object), c. 1925 - c. 1935

Three quails scurry among the autumn plants pecking at seeds. The decoration is done in extremely finely sprinkled gold and silver powder, with minute inlays of little squares of mother-of-pearl and gold leaf. Although this box dates from the 1930s, it is decorated entirely in a traditional style. Shogetsu was not in the least interested in ‘modernity.’
