Losing Tric-trac Player

Jan van de Velde (II), 1633

In 1633, a year after the death of the Haarlem minister and writer Samuel Ampzing, the Spigel, a series of 17 prints with his didactic verses, was published. Pendants like this tric-trac player and card-player and trios of half-figures brought attention to the popular moralizing message of the consequences of vanity and drinking in an unconventional way.
