Two Candlestands

anonymous, c. 1685 - c. 1700

Large candlestands of this type served to support candelabra for three or more candles. They stood in the corners of sumptuously furnished interiors, or sometimes in larger series along galleries. At the end of the seventeenth century large numbers of comparable candlestands were delivered for the palace at Versailles. The French model was also copied in England and the Netherlands.

    Torchère van verguld lindenhout. De voet bestaat uit drie straalsgewijs geplaatste gebroken voluten, versierd met staand acanthusblad en bedekt door drie lambrequins. In het middengedeelte van de driezijdige, opengewerkte schacht, die zich naar boven toe verwijdt, hangt een klokjessnoer; aan de zijkanten ervan bevinden zich drie met acanthusblad versierde consoles met knorlijst, die het zich naar boven verjongende bovendeel van de schacht dragen. De ronde, kelkvormige lichthouder is vlak afgedekt. BK-14302-b.
