Tray

Rokkaku Shisui (mentioned on object), c. 1910 - c. 1940

Lacquerwork underwent a major change in the early 20th century. Artists were seeking innovation and experimented with colours other than the traditional gold and silver on a black background. Shisui did the same with this tray, whose surface is like a pond. With subtle shades of green he created an almost tangible underwater scene.
