Getting started with the collection:
The Actor Ichikawa Danjūro VIII as the Ghost of Seigen, from the Series Comparisons for the 36 Poets
Utagawa Kunisada (I) (mentioned on object), 1852-10
The monk Seigen was in love with Princess Sakura (cherry blossom). She rejected him, whereupon he starved himself, and his spirit haunted her. The blue make-up and the pose of the hands indicate that this is a ghost. The poem is in keeping with Seigens’s restlessness: without cherry blossom, perhaps our heart would find peace in the spring.
