Scagliola is an artificial marble made of plaster and ground marble. From the 17th century it was used in Italy to imitate pietra dura or inlay work in marble and other kinds of stone. Extremely subtle nuances of colour could be achieved, as this table top demonstrates. The arms are those of the Amsterdam mayor, scholar and art collector Nicolaas Witsen (1641–1717).

    Tafelblad in kunststeen, vertonend op zwarte grond een rand van veelkleurige bloemen en vruchten rond een middenveld, waarin het wapen van het geslacht Witsen, op de hoeken omgeven door op takken met bloemen en bladeren zittende vogels; links en rechts van het wapen een mand, gevuld met bloemen en vruchten. De rand is omlijst door in witte kunststeen uitgevoerde dubbele biezen. Links onder het middenveld gesigneerd: "Gio Leone F. in Genova 1685".
