Still Life with Fruit and Flowers

Annette Reijerman, 1781 - 1832

This grand still life pushes the limits of watercolour. With precise and consistent handling of thin, translucent watercolours across the vast expanse of the paper, Reijerman achieved a lush luminosity unattainable in oil paint or other media. She became the first woman to receive a palm of honour from the Amsterdam-based learned society Felix Meritis in 1817.
