St Nicholas

Brepols & Dierckx zoon (mentioned on object), c. 1850 - 1900

This comic strip contains several unusual items. Saint Nicholas – still without a servant – is not riding a horse, but a donkey. ‘Even Jesus could have no better mount,’ as the narrator tells us in an aside. The ‘lazy-bones, liars and greedy children’ get asses’ ears as well as a smack with the rod. In the penultimate image, Saint Nicholas kneels and begs God to send good children many goodies.
