Slip Hook for Lifeboats

IJzeren sliphaak met ring voor de reddingboot. De sliphaak bestaat uit twee tegenover elkaar gezette haken, draaiend om eenzelfde as; aan de buitenkant hebben beide haken een oog, dat met een kettingschakel aan een ring boven is bevestigd. In de haken ligt een zware ijzeren ring, die aan de reddingboot bevestigd dient te worden. De sliphaak is zo ontworpen, dat wanneer het gewicht van deze zware ring wordt gehaald, de haken automatisch open gaan, zijwaarts getrokken door de kettingschakels aan de bovenste ring.

Explanatory note

  • Het ontwerp is duidelijk geïnspireerd op de ankerval van de Engelse luitenant Rodger uit 1830. De archieven vermelden de sliphaak van kapitein Talbot uit 1859.

Iron slip hook with ring for a lifeboat.

The slip hook consists of two counter-set hooks, turning on a common axle; on the outside they both have an eye, which is connected to a ring above with a chain link. In the hooks lies a second, heavy iron ring, which is attached to the lifeboat. The slip hook is designed in such a way that when the weight is taken off this heavy ring, the hooks will automatically open, pulled outward by the chain links attached to the upper ring.

The hook and ring were found separately and grouped together by a process of elimination and probability. Only the ring was numbered. The design is clearly inspired by the anchor release of William Rodger of 1830. The archives mention a slip hook by a Captain Talbot in 1859.1HNA 2.12.01 Min. Marine, inv. no. 3991.
