Shinchi before a Mirror, Winter, from the Series ‘Four Seasons in the Brothel District’
Kitano Tsunetomi, 1918
Tsunetomi was first and foremost a painter. The loose lineation and the less sharply outlined passages of colour in this print are therefore reminiscent of a painting. However, looking closely at the background of the print and the mirror, you can clearly see the imprint of the grain of the woodblock on the paper.
