Getting started with the collection:
Sea View from Watson’s Hotel in Mumbai
Samuel Bourne (signed by artist), 1870
The Watson Hotel is the oldest surviving cast-iron building in India. The cast-iron structure was manufactured in England, and the actual building was constructed in Mumbai between 1867 and 1869. It was therefore brand new when Bourne stayed there. From his window he could see the Royal Sailor’s House, at the right of the photograph. It now houses the police headquarters, and is on UNESCO’s heritage list of Victorian buildings.
