Schede van lans behorend bij wapenrek van Cornelis Tromp

anonymous, c. 1650 - c. 1679

Arms rack. This arms rack of katsura wood stood in the Amsterdam home of Cornelis Tromp (1629-1691). It may have been given by the VOC. In the 17th century this was known as the East-Indian gun case. It was probably made by Chinese craftsmen working on the northern coast of Java in the 17th or 18th century. The arms rack is decorated with birds and flowers. The swords and lances are Japanese in shape. The blades and some of the mounts were certainly made in Japan.
