Regendop voor de eleveerschroef van een carronade. Het heeft een cylindrisch lichaam met bolle afsluiting boven en trompetvormige voet, die een uitsnede heeft voor het kulas en twee gaten voor bouten, waarmee de dop op het geschut werd gemonteerd. Rond het lichaam is een grote, losse ring aangebracht, die de bouten van de regen afschermt en eenvoudig opgetild kan worden om ze te bereiken.

Explanatory note

  • Nederlandse regendoppen uit die tijd waren van roodkoper en hadden een platte bovenkant (zie NG-MC-796). De Nederlandse Marine liet J.C. Rijk in 1827 proeven met regendoppen doen; deze had in 1825 een reis naar Amerika ondernomen, wat in verband zou kunnen staan met de oorsprong van dit model.

Rain cap for the elevating screw of a carronade.

Cylindrical body with a round top and trumpet-shaped foot, which has a cutaway for the breech and two holes for bolts with which it was attached to the carronade. Around the body a large ring is placed, which seals off the bolts from the rain, but can be raised easily in order to reach the bolts.

In 1825, Julius Constantijn Rijk (1787-1854) obtained this rain cap during his stay in North America in the sloop of war Pallas.1J.C. Rijk, Generaal Rapport Z.M. Pallas, s.l. 1825, manuscript with 6 appendices in HSM, inv. no. NII (03144). In 1827 he carried out some experiments with rain caps of this type. Dutch rain caps of the period were made of copper and were flatter at the top and had a hexagonal base (NG-MC-796).
