Portrait of M.J.B.J. (Joannes) Beuns

Louis Royer, 1850 - 1852

The Fleming Joannes Beuns was a merchant in hides in Amsterdam and regent of ‘Brentano’s Steun des Ouderdoms,’ a Catholic old men’s home. This posthumous portrait of him was made by Louis Royer, the leading sculptor in the Netherlands at the time. That Beuns nevertheless makes a lively impression is due to the fact that his head is gently tipped up and turned to the side.
