Portrait of Count Hendrik van den Bergh

Paulus Pontius (mentioned on object), c. 1625 - before 1658

The caption to this print tells us that the sitter is Count Hendrik van den Bergh. However, the virtuoso painting by Anthony van Dyck used as a model had been known for centuries as a portrait of the Duke of Alva, governor of the Netherlands during the Eighty Years’ War. It was only when a link was made between the print and the painting that the man in the painting was correctly identified.
