Portrait of Antonio Canova (1757-1822)

attributed to Adamo Tadolini, c. 1822 - c. 1825

This frail old man is Antonio Canova, the most celebrated sculptor in Europe around 1800, and a model for many of Rome’s young artists. Despite its lifelike appearance, the sculpture was made after Canova’s death, based on his death mask. Perhaps it was Adamo Tadolini who made the sculpture; he was one of Canova’s last assistants and may have indented this as a tribute to his former master.

    Mansportret op ronde, geprofileerde voet. De geportretteerde kijkt licht naar opzij (rechts, heraldisch links). De man is gekleed in een overjas, eronder een vest en een hemd met opstaande kraag, waaromheen een sjaal is geknoopt met een strik aan de voorzijde. De man zelf heeft scherpe gelaatstrekken: een lang, vrij smal gezicht met geprononceerde jukbeenderen, diep liggende ogen en holle oogkassen, een kaal voorhoofd met de haargrens midden over de schedel, een scherpe, licht geopende mond met naar boven krullende mondhoeken en een vrij forse, iets gebogen neus.
