Persian sabre of Cornelis Tromp

anonymous, c. 1600 - c. 1700

This Persian sabre must have had a special significance for Cornelis Tromp, for he had himself immortalized in Roman dress with the weapon in a painting by Abraham Willaerts (in the centre of this display case). Such references to Classical antiquity were extremely common in this period.

    Perzische sabel met gevest van zilver en walrusivoor. Kromme gedamasceerde kling. Het eenvoudige kruisgevest heeft een pareerstang van verguld zilver versierd met bloemmotieven. De greep is bekleed met twee platen walrusivoor. Type Shamshir. Geen merken of inscripties. Dat dit wapen werkelijk bezit was van Cornelis Tromp wordt bewezen door een schilderij van Abraham van Westerveld (SK-A-1683).
