Pilgrim bottle with the arms of France

anonymous, 1665

Westerwald stoneware is recognizable by its decoration of cobalt blue on grey. Unusual features of this bottle are the fleurs-de-lys and the dark violet in the coat of arms. This colour, derived from added manganic oxide, first came into use during the mid-17th century. The lily motifs around the arms of France on the body suggest that the bottle was made for the French market.

Description
Kruik (pelgrimsfles) van steengoed op hoge voet met een bolvormig lichaam en met een smalle nek. Profielen op de nek en de voet. Op de zijkanten van de buik en schouder vier kleine, C-vormige oren. Gedeeltelijk bedekt met kobaltblauw en mangaanpaars. Op de buik tweemaal in reliëf het gedrukte en opgelegde wapen van Frankrijk met de datum '1665', omgeven door een krans van fleur-de-lis en rozetten. Op de nek een band gestempelde rozetten. De rand is gevat in een tinnen montuur. Grenzau, Westerwald.
