Pattipan (Stand for a Jug)

Designed by Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759), the depiction on this dish is known as ‘the three doctors.’ It might derive from the story of The Three Sages Tasting Vinegar about the poet Su Shi (1037-1101), the monk Foyin, and the Daoist Huang Tingjian (1045-1105). For Su vinegar tastes sour, for Foyin bitter, and for Huang sweet. This stands for the world views of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism.

    Ovale pattipan van porselein met gelobde wand, beschilderd in onderglazuur blauw. Op het plat drie Chinese mannen zittend in een omheinde tuin met een pauw en een vogel in een boom; op de binnenwand een schubpatroon, de buitenwand met servetwerk. Voorstelling naar ontwerp van Cornelis Pronk (1691-1754). Europese vorm en voorstelling in blauw-wit.

Explanatory note

  • De voorstelling werd gemaakt naar een ontwerp van Cornelis Pronk (1691-1754) met de titel de Doctoren. Hij maakte dit ontwerp, evenals de Parasoldames (zie bijvoorbeeld AK-RBK-15939), in opdracht voor de VOC. Verschillende uitvoeringen zijn bekend van dit ontwerp: met vier doctoren, drie zittend en één staand en met drie doctoren, zoals op deze pattipan. Beide uitvoeringen zijn zowel bekend in polychrome emails als in onderglazuur blauw. De verbeelding van ‘de drie dokters’ gaat mogelijk terug op het om het verhaal , over de dichter Su Shi (1037-1101), de monnik Foyin en de Taoist Huang Tingjian (1045-1105). Voor Su smaakt azijn zuur, voor Foyin bitter en voor Huang zoet. Dit staat voor de wereldvisies in het confucianisme, het boeddhisme en het daoïsme. Ching-Ling Wang
