Parasol with duck head handle

Brigg & Sons, c. 1896 - c. 1910

Although naturalistic animal heads had been used as parasol and umbrella knobs since 1880, it was around 1896 that they really came into fashion. From 1898, these heads were even made with shiny eyes. At the same time a switch connected to a spring was developed to open the beak, and make the tongue stick out. Brigg & Sons continued to make these various types until 1914.

    Parasol met ivorenknop, gesneden in de vorm van een eendekop, bespannen met crèmewitte zijde. Konische stok van ivoor. Bovenaan loopt een geribde gouden band om de hals van de eend, die rode ingelegde ogen heeft en een gele snavel. Onderaan een koperen stootdop. Merk op de koperen of vergulde schuif: BRIGG & SONS/ LONDON/ & / PARIS. De baleinen zijn met witte zijde bekleed en de punten zijn van koper. Met hoes van zijden linnenweefsel.
