Our dear mer(ship)maid
Piet van der Hem (mentioned on object), 1916-03-25
Although the Netherlands was neutral during the First World War, Dutch merchant vessels and passenger vessels were often the target of German submarines, otherwise known as U-boats. This print was published a week after the Tubantia was torpedoed by a German submarine on 16 March 1916. The monstrous mermaid is wearing the German imperial crown on her head and is sitting on the seabed among the wrecks f the Zaanstroom, the Batavier, the Medea and the Katwijk, which have already been sunk.
