To determine the ship’s position and chart its course, the captain had an entire arsenal of instruments at his disposal. Among the items found on Nova Zembla are an astrolabium catholicum (universal astrolabe), a fragment of a copper sounding line, a cross staff, a sextant and a chart compass.

    Graadstok, een houten stok met vierkante doorsnede. Op twee tegenoverliggende zijden zijn complementaire graadverdelingen van 0-90 graden ingekrast. Bij de graadverdelingen staan naast getallen ook inscripties gestempeld waaruit blijkt welke zijde werd gebruikt voor het aflezen van de hoogte (bij het waarnemen van de hoogte van de Poolster) en welke voor de topsafstand (bij het waarnemen van de zonshoogte). De schuif, die 43.4 cm lang moet zijn geweest, ontbreekt. De stok welke oorspronkelijk 85 cm moet zijn geweest is afgebroken.

Explanatory note

  • Graadstokken dienden, m.b.v. een schuif of kruis, voor het waarnemen van respectievelijk de hoogte of de topsafstand (het complement van de hoogte) van een hemellichaam. Claes Andriesz. Goutum is de waarschijnlijke maker en eigenaar van deze graadstok. Hij is mogelijk identificeerbaar als Claes Andriesz. Goutijk. Hij overleed tegelijk met Willem Barents tijdens de terugreis op 20 juni 1597, bij de noordwestkust van Nova Zembla.
