Explanatory note

  • De voornaamste functie van deze platen is het voorkomen dat obstakels in de haak verstrikt raken. Met de harp wordt de haak aan de reddingboot bevestigd. Een pin door de ronde platen borgt de haak en moet voor het strijken verwijderd worden. Om de haak te openen wordt dan de lijn, die over de schijven van haak en frame loopt, losgegooid en het gewicht van de boot zorgt dat de haak om de as draait en de sloepstakel loslaat. Twee handvaten aan de ronde platen vereenvoudiging de bediening. Dit model is zonder nummer gevonden, en is afgezien van de schaal en het materiaal identiek aan NG-MC-1000-1. Deze sliphaak werd in 1859 op Nederlandse oorlogsschepen beproefd en daarna officiëel bij de Marine ingevoerd.

Brass model of a slip hook or pelican hook.

The object consists of three main parts: a hook with a sheave at the straight end that turns on an axle situated in the bend; a frame made of two metal strips, connected with the axle of the hook at one end and at the other with a sheave and a shackle; and two metal discs embracing the frame and hook and turning on an axle fastened to the hook. The primary purpose of the discs is to prevent obstacles from getting caught in the hook. The hook is fastened to the lifeboat with the shackle. A pin through the discs secures the hook in a closed position and has to be removed before lowering the boat. To open the hook the line running over the sheaves of the hook and frame is released: the weight of the lifeboat will make the hook turn on its axle, releasing the tackle of the davit. Two handles on the discs ease the operation of the hook.

This hook was found without catalogue number and is identical to model NG-MC-1000-1, except for the size and material. It is believed that this is the model of the same slip hook that was tested on several Dutch naval vessels in 1859 and was soon afterwards adopted by the Navy.
