Model van een kaapstander in een houten frame dat twee dekken voorstelt. De kaapstander heeft een dubbele kop, ieder voor twaalf windbomen, en heeft twee pallen in de hiel tegen het teruglopen. De metalen koning loopt door tot in een spoor op het onderste dek. Deze kaapstander heeft twee snelheden, die verkregen door het gebruik van de ene of de andere kop; de bovenste kop moet in tegengestelde richting gedraaid worden om de lagere snelheid te bewerkstelligen. Het raderwerk met pallen is in de hiel van de kaapstander aangebracht. Schaal 1:10 (schatting).

Explanatory note

  • Eckhard was een Nederlander die in 1771 dit ontwerp aan de Engelse Admiraliteit aanbood, waarna de Defiance in 1772 met een dergelijke kaapstander werd uitgerust.

Entry

Construction model of a capstan on a wooden frame representing two decks of a ship. The capstan has a double head, each for twelve bars, and two pawls in the heel to prevent it from turning back. The metal spindle comes down onto the lower deck in a step. The capstan has two speeds, which are obtained by using one of two heads: the upper head providing less velocity when turned the other way. The gear train, working with pawls, is fitted into the base of the capstan.

Anthonie Gerard Eckhard (1740-1810) was a Dutchman who presented this design to the British Admiralty in 1771, which decided to have the Defiance fitted with such a capstan in 1772.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 187.
