Model of a Windlass

Model van een braadspil op een vloerplank. De trommel, tussen twee wangen opgehangen, heeft geen gaten voor windbomen: de braadspil wordt bediend met een enkele windboom aan de stuurboord wang, die met een pal in een tandwiel grijpt. In het midden staat een stut met twee houten pallen, die in het tandwielgedeelte van de trommel grijpen om het teruglopen te voorkomen. Tegen de bakboordwang is een extra tandwiel met pal aangebracht. Schaal 1:10 (schatting).

Entry

Construction model of a windlass, mounted on a base.

The barrel, hanging in two cheeks, has no holes for lever arms. The windlass is operated with just one lever arm, fixed with a pawl on a cogwheel outside the starboard cheek. At the centre there is a post with two wooden pawls, gripping in the cogwheel section of the barrel to prevent it from turning back. An extra metal cogwheel with a pawl is placed on the inside to port.

According to Obreen this windlass was to be used on smaller vessels.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 207.
