Memorial Damask Cloth Commemorating the Successful Dutch East Indies Flight and Paying Tribute to the Daring Pilots

Dijk, Koninklijke Weverij Van, 1924

The successful first trial flight in 1924 from the Netherlands to the East Indies unleashed a flood of chauvinist sentiments in the country. The Netherlands ruled the skies as it once ruled the seas, was the message. The pilot Jan van der Hoop was honoured with this napkin. The map below the depiction of the Fokker aircraft features all 22 stopovers on the route to Batavia.
