De tekening is vermoedelijk een voorstudie voor een deel van de voorstelling op het linkerpaneel van de Gouden Koets. Dit is het paneel waarop het eerbetoon aan koningin Wilhelmina van de toenmalige koloniën Oost- en West-Indië is geschilderd. Het betreft het deel waar een man een pajong vasthoudt rechts van de Nederlandse Maagd. Volgens het inventarisboek gaat het om een Javaanse man.
