Chest

anonymous, c. 1650 - c. 1710

Chests were important pieces of furniture for VOC functionaries who had to travel a great deal and often changed posts. This chest with drawers and a larger compartment at the top is very practical. In addition, it is quite handsome thanks to the exotic woods of which it is made. Such polished and light furniture was popular, as were carved ebony objects, for instance the crib on display elsewhere in this gallery.

    Kist met laden op onderstel van tropisch hout (ambon soetra?) met ten dele opgelegde lijsten van Coromandelhout, op later, zwart gebeitst onderstel. De rechthoekige kist heeft een ruimte, afgesloten door het deksel, boven drie laden, twee naast elkaar boven een over de hele breedte. Vak en laden zijn gescheiden door Coromandelhouten lijsten die over de zijkanten doorlopen. Opengewerkt en gegraveerde slotplaten, trekkers en handvaten van koper. Rechthoekig onderstel op vier omgekeerd peervormige poten. Van de onderste slotplaat ontbreekt aan de rechterkant een stukje.
