Housecoat with Waistcoat

anonymous, 1740 - 1770

The pattern of this chintz is a mix of European stylistic elements from different periods in the 18th century, based on so-called lace-patterned silks. This robe and matching waistcoat were probably made in the Netherlands. The material used to line the robe of sewn, striped silk may have been woven in Haarlem.
