Het Charing Cross station is gebouwd in 1864 nabij de Hungerford Market. Architect John Hawkshaw ontwierp een boogstructuur van glas. Tijdens renovaties aan deze dakconstructie in 1905 stortte deze in, met zes doden tot gevolg. Muirhead Bone heeft de steigers tijdens het herstel van dit voorval afgebeeld.
