Gepolychromeerd stapelmodel (stuurboord) van een driemast schroefstoomschip. Bijna verticale, rechte voorsteven met galjoen en krul als schegbeeld. Elliptisch hek met Rijkswapen, Mangin-schroef en roer met afgerond roerblad. Het model heeft een schoorsteen. De zeeg loopt op naar beide uiteinden, een reehout. Rondspant. Schaal 1:50 (afgeleid).

Explanatory note

  • De schroefstoomschepen 4de klasse van 3 stukken Riouw en Banda, lang 42 m, werden beide bij de Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij Fijenoord gebouwd in 1872. Beide waren composiet gebouwd en bestemd voor dienst in Oost-Indië. De Banda nam deel aan de Salamangan-expeditie in 1877, en nam in 1890 de functie van opnemingsvaartuig over van de Hydrograaf; afgekeurd en uit dienst gesteld in 1899 en bestemd als werkvaartuig bij de bouw van de vuurtoren op de Aroebank. De Riouw bracht op 21 februari het in beslaggenomen, onder Nederlandse vlag varende ss. Hoth-an naar Oleh-leh op; uit dienst en afgekeurd te Soerabaja in 1886 en verkocht.

Entry

Polychromed wooden ‘bread-and-butter’ style half block model of the starboard side of a three-masted screw steamer, mounted on a framed rectangular white, wooden backboard with rounded corners.

The side of the ship is closed and painted black. The bow features a straight, almost vertical stem and a beakhead with a decorative, gold-painted, scroll as a billethead. The cathead is decorated with a gold-painted lion’s head. The stern is elliptical and bears the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Below the stern an aperture with a four-blade, Mangin-type screw propeller and a round-headed rudder with a rounded blade are indicated. The model has one black funnel protruding from the deck. The sheer rises towards both ends. One sheer rail is indicated. The hull is round with a flat-bottom and painted a rust brown colour below the waterline. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form. All masts and funnel rake considerably.

The 3-gun screw steamers Riouw and Banda, both 42 metres long, were built at the yard of the Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij Fijenoord in Rotterdam in 1872. Both were composite built and destined for service in the Dutch East Indies. Banda took part in the Samalanga expedition in 1877 and from 1890 onwards took over the hydrographic surveys of the Hydrograaf. The screw steamer was decommissioned in 1899 and used as a working boat for the construction of the lighthouse on Aroe Bank. On 21 February 1895 Riouw brought in the seized Hoth-an at Oleh-leh. The screw steamer was decommissioned at Surabaya in 1886 and sold out of the service.1A.J.
