Gepolychromeerd mallenmodel (stuurboord) van een driemaster. De huid boven het barkhout is gesloten, zes geschutpoorten op één dek. Gewrongen spiegel, hol wulf, gesloten hek, geen zijgalerij; roer met vierkante roerkoning. Zeeg naar beide einden oplopend, één barkhout. Platbodem met drie schuifkielen. Schaal ca. 1:36 (afgeleid).

Explanatory note

  • De kanonneerboot met schuifkielen Hyena, gebouwd door P. Glavimans ca. 1806-1808, was geïnspireerd op de Engelse voorbeelden the Ringby en the Crass. Het ontwerp was bedoeld als uitlegger, een soort drijvende batterij met zeilvermogen voor noodgevallen. Er waren veel klachten over haar beperkte zeileigenschappen, toegeschreven aan te zware bewapening (drie kanons van 30 pond en twaalf carronades van 36 pond), te zware belading en een te hoog tuig. Er zijn een aantal proeven met het schip gedaan in 1808-1809. De Hyena werd in 1821 te Medemblik voor de sloop verkocht.

Entry

Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.

The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. Above the wale the side is planked. Six gun ports are painted on the side. The sheer rises slightly towards both ends. One wale is indicated, painted black. The stern has a round tuck, a hollow counter, a taffrail and a broad rudder. The hull is flat-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. Below the keel three black sliding centreboards are positioned.

The gunboat Hyena, with centreboards or ‘sliding keels’, built by Pieter Glavimans (1755-1820) between 1806 and 1808 and measuring 100 feet in length, was inspired by the British examples Ruby and Crash, which had been captured by the Dutch. Many complaints were made about the bad sailing qualities of Hyena, which were attributed to its rather excessive armament (three 30-pounder guns and twelve 36-pounder carronades), excessive loading and the height of the rigging.
