Explanatory note

Entry
Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard.
The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. Thirty-five gun ports are indicated by white frames in three tiers; some are damaged or missing. The forecastle and quarterdeck are outlined by ribbands with square hances. The sheer rises slightly towards the stern. Two wales and a sheer rail are indicated, all are painted black. The bow features an empty beakhead with two cheeks positioned directly on the beakhead, a beakhead bulkhead, part of a beakhead platform and a black knighthead. The stern has a round tuck and a hollow counter. The model does not have a taffrail, quarter galleries or a rudder. The hull is rather flat and painted white below the waterline. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.
The 90-gun ship of the line Chattam (Chatham), 195 feet long, was built by Pieter Glavimans Jansz (1768-1850) in Rotterdam in 1799-1800.1J.M. Obreen, Catalogus der verzameling modellen van het Departement van Marine, The Hague 1858, no. 277. Chattam was converted to a floating battery in 1809 and used to counter the British attack on Zeeland. In 1814 Chattam was a store vessel in Flushing and was plundered by soldiers, in 1823 the ship was sold for breaking up.2A.J.
