Ensemble Comprising a Jacket, Skirt, Waistcoat and Two Bow Ties

A. Chrobolka, c. 1910 - c. 1930

Is pink for girls? In the 18th century, the answer would have been a definite ‘no’. It was very common at the time for upper-class men and boys to wear pink suits. For many centuries, pink was considered an elegant and powerful colour. That this could also apply to women is illustrated by the 20th-century skirt suit (left) that belonged to the Countess of Bylandt.
