In his will, Cornelis Chastelein stipulated that the enslaved people in his household should be released after his death, as was the custom in Batavia at the time. He also left his Depok estate on Java to them. However, this proved problematic: Depok did not become common property of the descendants of these families until more than 150 years later, after any number of court cases.
