Door knocker in the form of an eagle’s head

This stern eagle once decorated the door of an Italian palazzo or grand residence. It held a ring in its beak, which was used for knocking. Its feathers are spread out around its stylised head like a flat collar. This type of sculptural door knocker was very popular in Italy from the sixteenth century onward.

    Adelaarskop van brons met resten van vergulding. De kop met gevederte van de hals is als een platte kraag uitgespreid en tegen een horizontaal vlak bevestigd. In de bek bevond zich waarschijnlijk een ring.
