The Paper King

anonymous, 1706

Philip V of Spain is a king only on paper, who derives his right to rule from mere documents. This print shows the king taking flight in the face of the Allied advance. In one hand he clutches the crown and papers proving his kingship. With the other he takes a knife to a precious palace tapestry, destroying what he leaves behind, like a spoiled child.

    Filips V, hertog van Anjou, koning van Spanje alleen op papier, vlucht uit het Spaanse Koninklijk Paleis met meeneming van de kroon, 1706. Met zijn dolk vernielt hij een wandtapijt. Met verzen in het Nederlands en Frans op het blad aan weerszijden van en onder de plaat. Onderdeel van een reeks van 19 spotprenten op de Fransen en bondgenoten uit het jaar 1706.
