The Execution of Haman

This print features a detail from Michelangelo’s fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Represented is Haman, the condemned persecutor of the Jews, from the Book of Esther. Prints of Michelangelo’s paintings were popular among tourists visiting Rome, and were available also in other Italian cities, including Venice.

Explanatory note

  • Folio 122 uit het prentalbum van Johann Georg I. Zobel von Giebelstadt (Röttingen 1543-07-20 - Bamberg 1580-09-07), de latere bisschop van Bamberg. Het album is vermoedelijk samengesteld tussen 1568 en 1570 in Venetië. Het album werd in 1999 uit elkaar genomen door een antiquair. De in totaal 124 folio's met prenten uit het "Zobel Album" werden aangekocht door verschillende musea en privéverzamelingen. De grootste groep (68 folio's) bevindt zich in de collectie van het Rijksmuseum. Naar een deel van het plafondfresco van Michelangelo in de Sixtijnse Kapel in de Vaticaanse Musea. Een voorstudie in rood krijt wordt bewaard in het British Museum in Londen (inv. nr.: 1895,0915.497).
