Casket with drawers

anonymous, c. 1800 - c. 1850

Japanese applied arts often play with expectations, surprising their users. The exterior of this casket is decorated with neat, ordered landscapes. However, the interior is very different, for the flap opens to reveal that the knobs of the drawers are butterflies, whose wings can even move.

Description
Lakkastje met laden en een wegneembaar voorpaneel. Vijf zijden van de kist en de binnenkant van het voorpaneeel zijn versierd met landschappen van de Zes Juweel-Rivieren (Mu Tamagawa). Een versiering van insecten op de laden, die zijn voorzien van knoppen in de vorm van metalen vlinders, waarvan de vleugels kunnen bewegen. Op de randen een bladrankmotief.
