Poster The Land Where Life Was Good

Iris de Leeuw (mentioned on object), c. 1973

In the 1970s protest against environmental pollution, the result of increasing industrialization and expansion, also grew in the province of Zeeland. This poster playfully alludes to the flag of Zeeland. The provincial motto ‘I struggle and emerge’ finds a critical sequel here: ‘but choke in the stench.’ It is a commentary on the modernization of Zeeland, which is celebrated in the film Delta Fase I (1962) shown here.
